Why do most Single Family home owners HATE Townhomes?

When I talk to home owners across the Greater Heights & Beyond, they despise the tall Townhomes.  I hear everything from:

  • Monstrous towers
  • Cookie cutter homes
  • Cheap wanna be homes
  • Crammed in sardines
  • .... and everything else you imagine.

I think it is because of the height on the homes, they block the view of the single family homes.  They are usually 3-4 story homes and sit on a 1500-2000sqft plot of land.  But I think this works for the newer generation, they do not care for gardening, lawn keep, or drains.   They also get a brand new home, and live in the best areas because the price is relatively low/median compared to single family homes.  It is an interesting conversation.  What is your opinion, your true opinion.  No holds back.

  1. I feel that after living in an apartment for so long throughout my 20's that I want a REAL house with a yard and a **DRIVEWAY**! Townhomes just feel like an annoyance that's better than an apartment but not quite a house. Also, the lack of yards makes for stir crazy children. I don't want to raise a family in a townhome where there is nowhere for my kids to play. I understand that some of these feelings are simply romantic notions but that's how I feel.

  2. Thank you Cameron, many home owners feel the same way. I love my little yard, although I do not like keeping up with grass and leaves... gurr

  3. I personally think the townhomes take away the friendly, neighborhood feel of the Heights and instead feel sterile and cookie-cutter. They are so jam-packed together, the only view out the window is of the neighboring townhome three feet away. Plus, some of them look like small compounds, and if you have more than two people living there, you can forget having a convenient place to park for every member of the household. And I agree with Cameron above. I want a house with a yard where my big dog can run and my children can play, and a driveway that allows my guests to easily access my home (not park halfway down the block every time they visit.) Also, I can't understand why many of these homes have master closets the size of bedrooms and secondary bedrooms the size of closets. Just doesn't make sense to me.
